El Hondo area – Darren Wilson

posted in: Birders Reports | 0

Just returned from El Hondo. Nothing juicy I guess, but a great day’s birding nonetheless.

Dropped in on the Visitor Centre, the ‘Twin Towers’ and the Vistabella Road today enjoying excellent birding in the sunshine. Had the place to myself – just how I like it! Due to the recent wet weather, waders were very evident with Lapwing in good numbers accompanied by Dunlin, Little Ringed Plover, Avocet, Green Sandpiper, Wood Sandpiper, Common Snipe and two Jack Snipe. (I think that could well be a Spanish tick for me). Other notable sightings included an immature Peregrine, an Osprey, a few Great White Egret and Bluethroat. and Glossy Ibis were seemingly everywhere today. Unfortunately, no Spotted Eagles and weirdly, no Kingfishers!! But lots and lots of Crag Martins, Marsh Harriers and Booted Eagles.
