El Hondo area – Geoff Culliford

Disappointingly I couldn’t get a car share to go to Pego today, so I headed to El Hondo. A Blue Rock Thrush was on the Old Monastery and just a bit further along there were two Great Spotted Cuckoos. Along the PFT there were plenty of Corn Buntings singing and a Marsh Harrier. By the dumped rubbish I heard either a Reed Warbler or a Great Reed Warbler singing. I then managed to find the Santa Agueda Platforms but not much was showing and there was no water. I then went to El Hondo where I met local bird guide, Graham Critchell who pointed out a Baillon’s Crake calling. We also saw four Marbled Ducks. Graham then told me where to see the Greater Spotted Eagle called Tonn, so I returned to Santa Agueda and the bird was sitting in the tree by the pylon before it flew off to be mobbed by a Booted eagle.
