El Hondo fields – Mark Etheridge

Plenty of birds seen on a circular tour round the edges of El Hondo on Saturday morning. Bryan Thomas and I were hoping for an early Roller, so we looked in all the regular places but no luck. Unfortunately, none of the birds were co-operative with us – the worst example was a Great Spotted Cuckoo which perched nicely in a tree to the north of El Hondo, but as soon as we lined up on it and lowered the car windows, we had an almighty invasion of mozzies! It took us several minutes of swatting to clear the car, needless to say the Great Spotted Cuckoo was long gone by the time we sorted ourselves out! Never mind, hoping for better luck on Tuesday when we’re off to Yecla with John Edwards.
