El Hondo, Vistabella area – Mark Etheridge

First bird of the day – a Great Reed Warbler at sunrise (hence the colour cast).A group of Bearded Tits appeared briefly…. Lovely little birds, but I wish I had caught the male in all his finery – these shots will have to do! I disturbed a Purple Heron on the walk to the first Vistabella hide. Warning – this hide is absolutely full of mozzies and I didn’t hang about!

Reed Warbler along the Vistabella walk – they have been clearing some of the reeds along here which is a pity as it shielded the birds from the road. One of two GS Cuckoos at the usual place. They’ve now been there for over two weeks.

They’re back! First sighting of a Roller at what is possibly the closest site to Gran Alacant, it’s the first track on the right as you drive along the road to the monastery. Another view of the same bird. They regularly perch out on the wires, unlike the football field Rollers which I never have much photographic luck with! An annoying Iberian Green Woodpecker which refused to post nicely for me, always staying partly hidden. This was near the Roller site.
