Mary’s Blog – Hecho Valley

We were having an easier day today starting with visits to a few pretty mountain villages we have not been to before. These were Argues del Puerto, Jasa and lastly Urdues where we heard a Cuckoo calling. We continued to Sieresa for a coffee stop at the Hotel Castillo de Archer, which I hadn’t realised is named after one of the local peaks.

The rest of the day was spent in the Hecho Valley where we saw Egyptian Vulture and numerous Griffon Vultures flying over Hecho. On the meadows there was a group of about twenty Red billed Chough, a Bullfinch was seen in a tree and a couple of Citril Finch were seen at the edge of the road above the river. Two Yellowhammers were also on the meadows and a Red Kite flew over. As we drove back towards Hecho later a raptor flew in front of the car and into the trees, folding it’s wings as it weaved between tree trunks. We were hoping it might be a Goshawk but we can’t be sure.

Species list – Griffon Vulture, Egyptian Vulture, Red Kite, Black Kite, Goshawk?, Cuckoo (HO), Swift, Swallow, House Martin, Grey Wagtail Robin, Black Redstart, Blackbird, Great Tit, Magpie, Chough, Chaffinch, Citril Finch, Goldfinch, Yellowhammer.
