Today we had arranged to take our friends Paul and Greta to see the Azure winged Magpies. We set off towards Torrevieja and arrived at the area where we had seen the birds before. We parked up and walked down the road towards the pink lake. By the time we reached the lake we had still not seen any of the birds we were looking for so we headed back up the next road. Somehow we had missed another road between these two so we headed back down this middle road and finally I spotted three Azure winged Magpies as they crossed over the road. Success! It was great to find the birds again, especially when we had taken friends to see them. The birds were flying around in a large garden and we were able to watch them through some large gates for quite a while. We tried to take photos but this proved difficult as the birds were a bit distant and were under the shade to some trees. We had good view of the birds when they flew overhead a few times and one bird eventually perched on a telephone wire long enough for us to try a few shots before we left. On our way back we stopped at La Mata and had a picnic under the trees. It was rather chilly due to a cool wind but we enjoyed watching a squirrel as we ate our lunch. After lunch we climbed the tower and had a quick look at the lake where a few small waders could be seen, possibly Dunlin and Kentish Plover. We set off for home all agreeing it had been a successful trip.
