Around Mazarron – Gordon Mills

In February we were allowed to leave our municipality again so had a few trips to Saladares del Guadalentín.

Species seen included – Lesser Short Toed Lark, Calandra Lark, Crested Lark, Black Redstart, Stonechat, Reed Bunting x 3, Iberian Green Woodpecker, 1 Stone Curlew and a flight of 12 Little Bustard.

16th February – Another visit in the late afternoon – 11+ Black Bellied Sandgrouse feeding on a ploughed field and a Red Legged Partridge.

Local estuary and EDAR Site Charca de Moreras – Black Winged Stilt, Pochard, Red Crested Pochard, House Martin, Swallow, Sardinian Warbler, Chiffchaff, Blue Rock Thrush, Grey Heron.

San Pedro del Pinatar – Ruff, Black Winged Stilt, Avocet, Flamingo, Slender Billed Gull.

March – La Azohia – Blue Rock Thrush.

Lorca to Sierra Espuna via Aledo – Rock Sparrow, Thekla Lark, Calandra lark, Chough, Raven, Corn Bunting, Blackcap.

6th March – seen from garden –1 Alpine Swift.

9th March – 1 Great Spotted Cuckoo, and at dusk 1 Eagle Owl.

20th March – we saw at the Charca de Moreras a pair of Garganey as well as House and Sand Martin, Barn and Red Rumped Swallow and 3 Male Garganey at the EDAR site. Later on at Mazarron Country Club we had 5 Common Swift.
