El Hondo fields – Greta Owen

It is always lovely to see the Flamingos flying over the Salinas as they were today, and also a pair of Shelduck. A family of Goldfinch were making use of the water that was left in the irrigation channel to have a drink and a splash.

The Montagu’s Harrier flew over pallet road and a covey of Red-legged Partridge ran across the road. A Roller seems to have taken up residence on a house at Monastery road and another and a pair of Magpies were sitting on a dead tree. As I was watching a flock of House Sparrows eating round the bottom of a tree, I happened upon a Roller nest. I sat watching for a few minutes as the parent/s were going back and forth with food for the chick/s.

On the parallel track a Kestrel was sitting on the cables eating its prey and an Iberian Grey Shrike was on a pylon preening itself after a bath. A Purple Heron flew up from the ditch at PFT, a Night Heron sat on the wall of the channel and a Green Sandpiper was at the alley.
