El Hondo, Monastery, El Pinet – Steve Saunders

Steve sent us a few sightings from the weekend.

25th February – El Hondo – There was a Whinchat flitting either side of the main track from the north gate as I was walking back. A pair of Great Crested Grebes was displaying on the lake in front of the lookout tower.

26th February – Monastery – A pair of Kestrel were occupying the derelict monastery and three Hoopoe were present. I had a Stone Curlew fly over whilst I was driving.

I think the cold wind is to blame for the absence of activity at El Pinet, where the only birds in the water were Flamingoes. Still plenty of Golden Plover hunkered down and two Little Stint were showing up very nicely in the strong light on the far bank.
