El Pinet – Steve Saunders

It’s been nearly a couple of years since  my wife and I last visited the Costa Blanca and a bit longer since we were here for Christmas. There have been a few changes in the local habitat, largely to due to flood defence measures and there seems to be fewer passerines around this time.

Strong afternoon sunshine lit up the lagoons. Alongside dozens of Greater Flamingo, a handful of Black-winged Stilt and Slender-billed Gull and Shelduck, I counted 230 Golden Plover, 30 Avocet, at least 30 Dunlin, 6 Little Stint, 6+ Ringed Plover, Kentish Plover, Greenshank, Redshank and Sanderling along with common passerines.
