At Arenal del Los Nietos – Lo Poyo early doors, I didn’t manage to connect with the Marsh Sandpiper reported yesterday but I did see the following – 2 Whimbrel, 8 Avocet, 6 Wood Sandpiper, a Ruff and 2 Green Sandpiper.
Then I made my way to Marina del Carmoli where I was greeted by 2 male and a female Montagu’s Harrier. By the time I got my camera ready they had moved away but I did manage to take a couple of long distant ones. They were displaying a one point and did not tolerate the local Marsh Harriers which were quickly ostracised. A cracking Caspian Tern flew north but didn’t hang around. Hopefully it will be spotted again at San Pedro Del Pinatar as it was going in that direction. Also along this stretch of Mar Menor were 6 Spoonbill and an unfortunate Little Bittern which had obviously been hit by a car.
