Mar Menor area – Paul Coombes

Thursday was spent having a stroll and few beers in Torrevieja with me Mam. Though I did manage to add AUDOUIN’S GULL and Crag Martin to the trip list.

Friday I was once again joined by Mark Christopher Powell. There was a bitterly cold biting wind today. We first had a quick look around Mark’s local patch in Los Montesinos, noteable birds being Booted Eagle, Marsh Harrier, Iberian Green Woodpecker, Black Redstart & Southern Grey Shrike. On our way to San Pedro and a quick stop at the small reserve of Lo Monte. White headed Duck and BLACK NECKED GREBE were new additions. Also seen were Green Sandpiper, Black Winged Stilt, Stonechat, Grey Heron, Shoveler, Teal, Pochard, Cormorant and Crag Martin.

On to the Salinas at San Pedro, Lo Pagan and the waterway in El Mojón. MONK PARAKEET, Greater Flamingo, Slender Billed, Black headed, Yellow legged and Mediterranean Gull, and Grey Wagtail we’re present along with a fab variety of waders including Dunlin, Sanderling, Little Stint, Ruff, Black tailed Godwit, Avocet, Ringed Plover, Redshank, Spotted Redshank, Black Winged Stilt, Turnstone, Snipe, GREENSHANK and Little Ringed Plover. How we lasted the day in that uncomfortable cold wind I just don’t know. It felt much more like home in UK not sunny Spain. Bird Trip list 102 species.
