Monnegre, Maigmo, El Clot, Santa Pola, Laguna Rosa – Daniel Newton

Second day out with the brilliant Bryan proved as fruitful as previous day.

Monnegre and Maigmo

Target species was Trumpeter Finch and mission was well and truly accomplished. Other highlights were Blue Rock Thrush, Rock Bunting, Melodious Warbler, Crested Tit, Short-toed Treecreeper, Black-eared Wheatear, Black Wheatear, Crag Martin and a very unexpected Roller.

We finished with a couple of hours together at El Clot, where Little Bittern, Squacco Heron, Night Heron, Marbled Duck and Red-knob Coot were all seen.

65 species noted in total.

After I left Bryan, I went to Santa Pola harbour where I caught up with Audouin’s Gull and a Lesser Black-backed Gull amongst the Yellow-legged Gulls.

Finally, I went for my evening walk alongside Laguna Rosa at dusk. Nightingale was in full song, a Little Owl sat up on the wires watching me and finally, as hoped, a couple of Red-necked Nightjars started singing away. Bliss. A fantastic, if tiring day!
