Petrola/Corral Rubio – Mark Etheridge

We had an all-day expedition to the Bonete Steppes, and very quickly saw our target bird, the Great Bustard, probably at least 30 individuals seen but all at a great distance. I was delighted to get my first ever Black Kite, other raptors included Short-toed Eagle, Buzzard, several Marsh Harriers and a couple of Lesser Kestrels. Other highlights included a distant flyover of two male Golden Orioles, although they weren’t present at their regular site near Higueruela. Other birds of interest included Calandra Lark, Yellow Wagtail, Gadwall, Gull-billed and Whiskered Terns, Bonelli’s Warbler and Rock Sparrows.
