San Felipe and Crevillente – Paul Coombes

Day 10 – A friend of my Mam has very kindly lent me a car for a couple of days, so around Midday I was on my way to El Hondo. All the usual suspects were present ie Purple Swamphen, Black Winged Stilt, BLUETHROAT, CHIFFCHAFF, RED CRESTED POCHARD, Marsh Harrier, Little Egret, Sardinian Warbler, BLACK REDSTART and Grey Heron.

Unlike yesterday, when ready to leave, this time the car started! So, I headed into the mountains above Crevillent and to a well know Bonelli’s Eagle territory/nesting site. It wasn’t too long a wait before an adult bird drifted into view and quickly dropped toward the cliff face and out of view. I tried to relocate it but with no joy. Meanwhile a calling DARTFORD WARBLER eventually showed itself and a pair of Black Wheatear were scanning the area from their preferred vantage point. Large flitting groups of Serin, Goldfinch and Greenfinch were providing the background noise. At dusk, with no further sightings of the Bonelli’s Eagle I made my way back to Montesinos. Bird trip list 110 species.
