San Fulgencio, Crevillente – Paul Coombes

Paula was booked on a day trip to Benidorm today (unlucky) with my mam and friends so I ventured out alone for a morning drive / walk around the local area. A field full of Gull billed Tern were seen near San Fulgencio and some time was spent with a very confiding Little Owl by La Marina. Montagu’s Harrier, Stone Curlew, Roller, Woodchat Shrike, Bee eater and a colony of nesting Collared Pratincole near El Hondo were the other birds of note.

In the afternoon I met with a good friend and local birder Mark Powell. After a catch up and beer we headed to the mountains near Crevillente. Iberian Green Woodpecker, Thekla’s Lark, Bonelli’s Eagle, Blue Rock Thrush, Crag Martin, Turtle Dove, Red Legged Partridge and Black Wheatear were all additions to the trip list. The highlight though was undoubtedly the many Alpine Swift feeding around us with some whizzing past just a few feet away.
