Tarifa Trip – By Stephan and Els

we visited Tarifa (a little less than 650 km from home) staying in Good apartment hotel: El Cortijo Las Piñas, 9 km from Tarifa. We had visits to Punta Paloma, Playa de los Lances (Tarifa side and near Punta Paloma), Punta Secreta (though we would call it Punta Carnero), Sierra de Plata, lakes and meadows between Barbate and Zahara de los Atunes, the area of the former lake of La Janda, and Puerto de Ojén (part of the Acornocales Parque Natural). Good migration: we saw 16 species of raptors, the arrival of the Honey Buzzards was impressive, with the birds coming out of the mist on the Straits, plugging against the wind, just above the waves. New for us was the Bald Ibis , we saw two of them. We know they are from a project, but nevertheless. We saw and heard the Iberian Chiffchaff, (better name: Iberchiff-chiff-chiff??). That was in the Alcornocales, perhaps the most beautiful of the Spanish PN. We didn’t see White-rumped Swift or Little Swift, and we heard no reports from other birders. A bit too early, we think. No birding here, but good to visit: the site and museum of the Roman village of Coelia Bolonia. Surprisingly: the very good food we had this trip.
