Birding in Spain – 19th to 26th February – Trevor Ashley

Fri 19 Feb- Salinas, El Pinet, Vistabella and San Felipe – A good list of all the usual birds, the highlights being a Harris Hawk and the company of Bryan Thomas!

Sat 20 Feb- Salinas- Spotted Redshank. El Pinet- Very close, prolonged views of a Water Rail by the car park fence.

Wed 24 Feb – Guardamar- Gannet, Razorbill, Mediterranean Gull.

Thurs 25 Feb – Guadelentin Valley – Golden Eagle (first winter), Short-toed Eagle, Little Bustard (18), Black-bellied Sandgrouse (7), Great Spotted Cuckoo (2), Calandra Lark, Tree Sparrow, Corn Bunting and Stone Curlew. Sierra Espuna – Ring Ouzel, Mistle Thrush, Crested Tit, Raven and Crossbill.

NB: The military zone near the summit is becoming more difficult to access with new barriers and warning signs a greater distance from the top.

Fri 26 Feb – San Felipe – Marbled Duck (at least a dozen), Glossy Ibis, Buzzard, Swallow and Bluethroat. A chance encounter with Brian and Malcolm along with fine weather made for an enjoyable morning.
