Mary’s Blog – Corral Rubio, Petrola

Today we headed up to the Corral Rubio and Petrola area. Crested Larks and Crows were plentiful and several Buzzards, Kestrels, Marsh Harriers and Hoopoes were seen. Finally, after driving around our usual tracks for some time and becoming a bit despondent, I spotted something a good distance away in a field which turned out to be a single Great Bustard. Another two were then spotted nearby, but not the usual numbers we see. They all count though! With apologies, this photo is from last year when we had much better views.

A few Calandra Larks were nice to see along with Corn Buntings and Goldfinches. We ate lunch by the Petrola lagoon where there were various gulls and Mallards. At the road end of the track a small patch of water held a Common Sandpiper, a Lapwing and a Water Pipit. Not our best day at this location but still an enjoyable outing.
