Santa Pola to Gran Alacant beach road by Paul Coombes

Today I visited the Coastal Rd between Santa Pola and Gran Alacant. Almost immediately after leaving Santa Pola I noticed a stunning male Blue Rock Thrush on top of a derelict building. Nice start! Stonechat and Black Redstart were a common sight all along the verges and a pair of Black Wheatear showed themselves briefly as I scanned the beach side rocks. A lone WhimbrelRinged Plover and a few Turnstone were also seen along the rocks and sands. Sandwich Terns and Audouin’s Gulls were noted among the many Yellow Legged and Black headed Gulls. The scrub areas toward The Clot produced many Crested Larks, Sardinian Warblers and Serin. Scanning of the cliffs was disappointing, with no sign of any hoped for Ravens or Raptors. A very enjoyable drive was had and another visit is on the cards before I return home.
